Seoul vs. Incheon vs. Busan for International Students
Last updated October 5, 2026
If you have some flexibility in where you'll be staying — or you're choosing between universities or job offers in different cities — here's a general feel for how these three compare.
Seoul
The obvious default, and for good reason: the largest concentration of universities, employers, and international communities in the country, plus the most extensive subway network for getting around without a car. It's also the most expensive and competitive of the three, and popular neighborhoods near major universities can book up quickly. Right choice if you want the most options and don't mind the pace.
Incheon
Connected to Seoul by subway, and home to Incheon International Airport (handy for frequent trips home) — though Incheon is a large city, and not every neighborhood is close to the terminals. It also includes Songdo, a newer, planned international business district with a growing expat and student population.
The subway link is real, but it can understate how long trips take: commute time varies substantially by neighborhood. Songdo to central Seoul is a very different journey from eastern Incheon to western Seoul, so check the actual route to your campus or workplace before you choose. As a broad tendency, Incheon is often calmer and somewhat more affordable than central Seoul — but that isn't a guarantee, and it varies by neighborhood and building.
Busan
Korea's second-largest city, on the southeastern coast — a genuinely different pace of life, with beaches, a major port, and its own set of universities and industries. It's further from Seoul (roughly 2.5–3 hours by KTX, depending on the train), so it suits people who have a specific reason to be there — a program, a job, or just a preference for coastal city life over the capital.
Choosing between them
In practice, this is usually decided for you by where your university or job actually is — commute time matters more day to day than any general city comparison. Where there's genuine choice (remote-friendly work, a program with multiple campuses), weigh how much you value Seoul's density of options against Incheon's often calmer setting (and what the commute from your particular neighborhood would be) or Busan's coastal change of pace.
